The second-best option: the blue hour right after sunset — the light turns cooler and bluer, the mood more intimate and dramatic. Especially striking on Cologne’s Rhine banks with the city skyline behind you.

Why is midday light unsuitable for a couple shoot?
Midday light between 11 am and 3 pm is hard light — it falls steeply from above, creates harsh shadows under the eyes and nose, and makes faces look flat and unflattering. In summer there’s the heat factor too: most people look better in photos when they’re not sweating.
The exception: an overcast sky. Clouds act like a natural softbox — the light becomes diffuse and works well for portraits at almost any time of day.
