What Do You Wear for a Business Portrait?

For a business portrait in Cologne, the rule is: muted colours, clean cuts, no distracting patterns. Your clothing should support you — not dominate. A classic dark blazer or an elegant blouse in navy, charcoal or burgundy looks strongest in photos.

What Do You Wear for a Business Portrait?

The most important tips for your next business photo — from a photographer who sees it every day.

What do you wear for a business portrait?

For a professional business portrait in Cologne, Chirlyart Photography recommends: muted solid colours in navy, charcoal, black, burgundy or olive green. Clean cuts without logos, bold patterns or wide stripes. The outfit should emphasise the person — not distract from the face.

Pure white sometimes works, but it can wash out depending on the light. A cream or light-grey top is often the better alternative for lighter looks.

Which colours work best in business photos?

The best colours for business portraits are navy, charcoal, black, deep burgundy and muted greens. These colours look calm, serious and timeless in photos — and lead the viewer’s eye straight to the face.

Bright colours like neon yellow, vivid orange or bright red are often stronger in a photo than in the mirror — they steal the show from your face. If you want colour: better as an accessory than as your main garment.

How many outfits should I bring for a business portrait?

For a business portrait shoot in Cologne, Chirlyart Photography recommends bringing 2–3 outfits: one formal look (jacket, blazer), one semi-formal look and optionally something casual for a more authentic feel on LinkedIn or your own website.

More than 3 outfits isn’t worth it for a short portrait shoot — outfit changes cost time, and you can see the tiredness in the images.

What should you not wear for a business portrait shoot?

Definitely avoid: large logos and brand names, wide stripes (they shimmer in photos), neon colours, dresses or blouses with tiny patterns (they create a moiré effect), and freshly folded clothing that still has creases.

Jewellery is fine — but keep it understated. Too many necklaces or bold earrings distract. A single statement piece often looks more elegant in photos than several small ones.

What does a business portrait in Cologne cost?

A character portrait or fashion editorial for business purposes with Chirlyart Photography in Cologne costs €550 in the studio including 5 edited images. An actor & artist portrait costs €750. All images from the gallery are available optionally for +€400 — professional high-resolution post-production is always included.
